Bournemouth - introduction

Bournemouth was born as tourist town and it still is one of the most charming and friendly destinations for tourists. Its attractions are possibly aimed at the more elderly visitor although there is plenty to see for younger people and families as well. After all, with a population of 164,000, it is still the largest town in Dorset, the country to which it belongs. It is situated on the South West coast in-between Southampton and Portsmouth.

The town is famed for being the home of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, The Arts Institute at Bournemouth as well as Bournemouth University and the Bournemouth International Centre.

Bournemouth has its beginning as a spa town for the sick rich of England, but it soon developed to become a place which you can visit even if you’re feeling perfectly fine. The cool sea air is complemented by the warm sandy beaches and the sleepy atmosphere of the town can draw one in to a happy sense of comfort. Interestingly, in a national wide survey the town came out as the happiest place in Britain – with a whopping 82 per cent if people saying they were happy in their life. So you’ll be sure to meet some smiling faces when you’re relaxing in this beautiful town.
